Analyzing GPO awards season after Premier's Breakthroughs: Vizient rewrote its award criteria, and Premier rewarded pricing predictability
October 14, 2026
Premier closed GPO awards season at Breakthroughs 26 on October 8, its first as a private company, giving its Trailblazer Award for a GPO supplier to Stryker for helping "enhance pricing predictability for members." Two weeks earlier, Vizient rewrote what its supplier awards are for, adding supply chain resiliency and non-acute care to the criteria. And in Vizient's 2024, 2025 and 2026 awards, no category went to the same supplier two years running.
This piece answers six questions. Anything labeled "Our read" is opinion.
- What did Premier reward at its first Breakthroughs as a private company?
- Where do Premier's member and innovation awards point?
- What is Vizient rewarding now that it was not before?
- Does a Vizient award carry over from one year to the next?
- Why did two GPOs pick AirLife and CSL Behring this year?
- What should a supplier take from the fall meetings?
What did Premier reward at its first Breakthroughs as a private company?
Premier met October 6 to 8 at National Harbor, Maryland, the first Breakthroughs since it was taken private on November 25, 2025 and the first under CEO Emad Rizk. (Premier releases.) Its Trailblazer Award for a GPO supplier went to Stryker. Premier's release says Stryker "launched multiple agreements with Premier spanning a broad range of categories" and worked with Premier "to enhance pricing predictability for members amid continued supply chain and market pressures." (Premier release, 10/06/2026.)
The price pressure in that sentence has a date. On September 26, 2025, the Commerce Department published notice of a Section 232 national security investigation into imports of personal protective equipment, medical consumables and medical equipment, the kind of investigation that can end in tariffs. (Federal Register, 09/26/2025.) Two weeks before Breakthroughs, Premier led 37 organizations in a letter supporting the ONSHORE Manufacturing Act (S. 4994), which would give a 30 percent tax incentive for investment in domestic manufacturing of critical medical supplies and drugs before 2031 and a 10.5 percent credit on income from selling them. Premier's summary says the bill would help "ensure that domestically manufactured goods are priced competitively with globally sourced products." (Premier policy brief, 09/22/2026.)
Our read: Premier answered the same pressure twice in three weeks, once in policy and once on stage. In Washington it backed tax incentives to make domestic supply price-competitive. At Breakthroughs it gave its supplier award to a device maker for keeping members' prices predictable. Vizient and HealthTrust rewarded suppliers for keeping product available; Premier rewarded one for keeping the price steady. Those are two halves of one worry, and Stryker, also Vizient's Stewardship Supplier of the Year, was named for both this fall.
Where do Premier's member and innovation awards point?
The Alliance Excellence Award, which Premier calls its "highest recognition of a member organization," went to Texas Health Resources, a 29-hospital system in North Texas, for the second time; it first won in 2013. Premier's release says Texas Health "has recently launched an initiative to modernize its supply chain and payment processes with Premier." (Premier release, 10/07/2026.) The new Continuum of Care Alliance Excellence Award went to Leisure Care, a Seattle senior living operator founded in 1976 that runs independent living, assisted living and memory care communities. The release singles out food: Leisure Care "has achieved 90 percent utilization of its food supplier and distributor contracted manufacturer agreements (CMAs) across its extensive community portfolio." (Premier release, 10/07/2026.) The Premier Cares Award and $100,000 went to the VCU Mobile Health and Wellness Program, a nurse-led program serving Richmond, Petersburg and seven rural Virginia communities, which Premier credits with "reducing avoidable hospital utilization." (Premier release, 10/08/2026.)
Our read: the continuum award tells you what Premier values in a member outside the hospital, and it is contract compliance in food. For a senior living operator, food is the category where a GPO contract shows up every day, and Premier chose to celebrate a member that routes nine in ten of those purchases through its agreements. A supplier selling into senior living through Premier should read that as the yardstick.
The Innovation Celebration honored products launched in the past year. Two of them line up with the year's other awards. Kedrion was honored for QIVIGY, an intravenous immunoglobulin approved by the FDA in 2025 for adults with primary humoral immunodeficiency. (Kedrion release, 10/06/2026.) Quanta Dialysis Technologies was honored for a hemodialysis system its chief executive says expands access to dialysis "from the hospital to the home." (Quanta release, 09/10/2026.) The other honorees Premier named were Cordis, Germitec, HemoSonics, NXC Imaging, Canon Group and Roche Diagnostics. (The Journal of Healthcare Contracting, 09/21/2026.)
Our read: in immunoglobulin, HealthTrust and Vizient both named the established supplier, CSL Behring, for reliable access, while Premier put a newly approved IVIG on stage. Both moves serve the same member need, more dependable supply of plasma-derived therapy, one by rewarding the established supplier and one by encouraging another source. Quanta fits the continuum theme: a dialysis platform built to move care out of the hospital.
What is Vizient rewarding now that it was not before?
Vizient rewrote the criteria. In 2025, its Supplier of the Year awards recognized suppliers that "support Vizient's mission to strengthen providers' delivery of better, more affordable care." In 2026, they recognized "measurable impact in areas critical to healthcare performance and supply chain resiliency." The Excellence Awards were for "improving total cost of care within their category" in 2025. In 2026 that became "supporting acute and non-acute care settings through expanded access, innovative solutions and measurable client value." (Vizient releases, 09/16/2025 and 09/23/2026.)
The winners match the new words. Two supplier-of-the-year awards went to supply assurance, to AirLife and Amphastar Pharmaceuticals. Non-acute care moved from an Excellence Award to its own Non-Acute Supplier of the Year, won by Convatec. Stryker was named Stewardship Supplier of the Year, and the next day Vizient announced its 2026 hospital Top Performers "in clinical quality, ambulatory care, and supply chain stewardship." (Vizient releases, 09/23/2026 and 09/24/2026.)
The individual winners carry the same story. Amphastar, named Pharmaceutical Supply Assurance Supplier of the Year, had received the FDA's Drug Shortage Assistance Award in March 2025 for its subsidiary IMS's efforts to mitigate and resolve the shortage of epinephrine injection, 0.1 mg/mL syringes. (FDA award, 03/27/2025.) Its June 2026 quarterly report says it carried a backlog "primarily as a result of competitor shortages and supplier constraints," and that it is working to "remediate an FDA warning letter" at the same IMS facility. (Amphastar 10-Q, quarter ended 06/30/2026.) Fresenius Kabi won Pharmacy Strategic Programs Excellence, and two weeks later Vizient announced a collaboration with Fresenius Kabi to expand supply assurance for IV solutions, the category Baxter's plant closure had disrupted. (Vizient releases, 09/23/2026 and 10/06/2026.) McKesson won Distribution Excellence while reshaping what it distributes: in May 2025 it announced plans to separate its Medical-Surgical Solutions segment into an independent company, and on October 6, 2026 it and CD&R agreed to acquire Option Care Health, the home and alternate-site infusion provider. (McKesson 8-K, 05/08/2025; CD&R release, 10/06/2026.) Vizient's release does not say which McKesson business the award recognizes.
Our read: Amphastar's award is for filling gaps other manufacturers left, and its own quarterly report shows how thin that can be: the same plant the FDA praised for ending a shortage is now remediating a warning letter. A supply assurance award is a statement about the past year, and members relying on Amphastar should watch the IMS remediation. Fresenius Kabi's award and the IV collaboration two weeks later read as one move: Vizient adding depth in the product line that defined its 2025 award.
Vizient's description of itself changed the same way. Its awards releases described its contract portfolio as "$140 billion in annual purchasing volume" in 2024 and "$156 billion in annual purchasing volume" in 2025. The 2026 release gives no dollar figure and describes reach: "More than two-thirds of the nation's acute care providers and more than one-third of ambulatory providers rely on Vizient solutions and services." (Vizient releases, 2024 to 2026.)
Our read: in one year, the language Vizient uses to judge suppliers moved from cost toward resiliency and care outside the hospital, and the language it uses about itself moved from purchasing volume toward the share of providers it serves. A supplier reading the award criteria should read them as a statement of what Vizient now wants to be measured on.
Does a Vizient award carry over from one year to the next?
No. In Vizient's last three supplier award releases, no category kept its winner from one year to the next. Supplier Partner of the Year went to AirLife in 2024, Baxter in 2025 and STERIS in 2026. Distribution Excellence went to Henry Schein in 2025 and McKesson in 2026. Every category with the same name in consecutive years changed hands. (Vizient releases, 09/17/2024, 09/16/2025 and 09/23/2026.)
The suppliers come back, in different categories. Fresenius Kabi has won in all three years: Novaplus Program Excellence in 2024, Pharmaceutical Supply Assurance in 2025 and Pharmacy Strategic Programs Excellence in 2026. STERIS won Group Buy Program Excellence in 2024, then Supplier Partner of the Year and Indirect Spend and Purchased Services Excellence in 2026. Philips won two Vizient awards in 2025 and none in 2026, then was named HealthTrust's Capital Supplier of the Year. (Vizient releases, 2024 to 2026; HealthTrust release, 07/13/2026.)
Look at what each Supplier Partner of the Year was dealing with in the year it won. AirLife won in September 2024, three months after Vyaire Medical, whose respiratory and anesthesia consumables AirLife had bought in May 2023, filed for Chapter 11 on June 9, 2024 and began selling and winding down its remaining businesses. (Fierce Biotech, 06/2024; Respiratory Therapy, 09/13/2023.) Baxter won in September 2025, a year after Hurricane Helene closed its North Cove, North Carolina IV fluids plant. (Baxter release, 10/08/2024.) STERIS won in September 2026, the year an EPA rule required most commercial ethylene oxide sterilizers to have emissions controls and continuous monitoring in place by April 6. (EPA final rule, 04/05/2024.) STERIS runs a network of more than 50 contract sterilization and laboratory facilities, with ethylene oxide among its methods. (STERIS 10-K.) Ethylene oxide sterilizes about half of the medical devices used in the U.S. (EPA.)
Our read: Vizient's top supplier award has gone, three years running, to a supplier sitting on a supply line that was under pressure that year: respiratory consumables through a manufacturer's bankruptcy, IV fluids after a hurricane, and sterilization during a compliance deadline. The award reads less like recognition of a long relationship and more like recognition of who kept a stressed category supplied. That also explains the rotation. The pressure moves every year, and so does the winner. The better measure of where a supplier stands with Vizient is whether it keeps returning to the list in some category; Fresenius Kabi, three years in three categories, is the case in point.
Why did two GPOs pick AirLife and CSL Behring this year?
AirLife is a company built by acquisition. It is the former SunMed, which bought Vyaire Medical's respiratory and anesthesia consumables in May 2023 and Avanos Medical's respiratory portfolio in June 2023, then took the name of one of the brands it had bought. (Respiratory Therapy, 09/13/2023.) A year later, in 2024, Vizient named it Supplier Partner of the Year. (AirLife release, 09/19/2024.) In 2026, HealthTrust named it Medical-Surgical Supplier of the Year, citing "strategic safety stock investments that support supply continuity," and Vizient named it Supply Assurance Supplier of the Year. (HealthTrust release, 07/13/2026; Vizient release, 09/23/2026.)
CSL Behring is the other supplier named by both. HealthTrust cited "reliable access to critical plasma-derived therapies"; Vizient named it Pharmaceutical Supplier Partner of the Year. (HealthTrust release, 07/13/2026; Vizient release, 09/23/2026.) When the administration announced plans for pharmaceutical tariffs on April 2, 2026, CSL said its exposure would be limited, because "CSL's US plasma therapies are derived entirely from US-sourced plasma." (CSL statement, reported by Biotech Dispatch, 04/07/2026.)
Our read: in a year when imported drugs carried a tariff risk, the pharmaceutical supplier both GPOs named was one whose U.S. plasma therapies are made from U.S. plasma. HealthTrust's reason, reliable access, is the same reason that sourcing provides.
Our read: the two moments line up. In 2024, AirLife already owned the consumables when their original maker filed for bankruptcy, and Vizient named it Supplier Partner of the Year three months later. In 2026, both HealthTrust and Vizient named it again, and HealthTrust said why in so many words: safety stock and supply continuity. For a consumables supplier, the record says GPOs reward the company that keeps product moving when someone else in the category cannot, and that they remember it.
What should a supplier take from the fall meetings?
Three things follow from the record above. First, a Vizient award is a one-year recognition, so a supplier's case to Vizient members rests on returning to the list, not on defending a category. Second, the 2026 criteria name supply chain resiliency and non-acute care in so many words, and both Vizient and Premier added or expanded awards for care outside the acute hospital this year. Third, suppliers that exhibited at Vizient's Innovative Technology Exchange on September 24 should expect months before contract news. Last year Akumin exhibited on September 15, 2025 and announced an Innovative Technology designation on November 18, 2025; X-Bolt Orthopedics exhibited on September 9, 2025 and announced a contract on February 3, 2026. (Akumin releases, 09/15/2025 and 11/18/2025; X-Bolt releases, 09/09/2025 and 02/03/2026.)
Our read: award criteria are a direct public statement from a GPO about what it wants from suppliers in the year ahead. This year's say continuity, stewardship and reach beyond the hospital.
