Nineteen of the twenty-two jobs managing a supplier's GPO relationship sit on the supplier side

GPO Intel can read the job boards of 24 of the 254 GPOs, distributors, manufacturers and health systems it tracks, once health systems are set aside. Across those 24, twenty-two open jobs exist to manage the commercial relationship between a supplier and a group purchasing organization. Nineteen are at suppliers. The GPOs and their affiliates have 343 open roles between them and three of these. Computed October 4, 2026, from 397 open requisitions.

What this can and cannot see

35 of the 254 tracked entities have a careers source GPO Intel can reach. 24 of those had an open requisition on the run date once health systems are set aside. Two returned nothing at all on the last run, and a board with no openings cannot be told from a board we failed to read. Two more are read through a shared applicant system and are visible only where a posting names them.

Nothing here is a statement about the industry. It is a statement about 24 named companies, and a company absent from them was not read rather than found to be quiet.

A distributor's count is not its whole board. For Cardinal Health, McKesson, BD, Cencora, Medline, Owens & Minor, Henry Schein, Patterson Companies and Evernorth, GPO Intel keeps only roles that read as GPO-facing and whose posting names a GPO, because a distributor's warehouse and clinical hiring answers a different question. Those nine contribute 54 roles here, fourteen of them at Cardinal Health. None of those nine boards is read in full, so none of these nine counts is that employer's hiring.

Who staffs the relationship

Twenty-two roles across this set manage the commercial relationship between a manufacturer or distributor and a group purchasing organization. Nineteen are at suppliers: Cardinal Health six, BD six, McKesson three, Henry Schein two, Patterson Companies one, Evernorth Health Services one.

Three are at GPOs and their affiliates, which have 343 open roles between them. Vizient posts two. HealthTrust posts one.

One of those twenty-two is classified two ways and we report both. Evernorth's role is for Matrix GPO, which is a GPO, and on that reading the split is eighteen supplier-side against four. GPO Intel's scraper admits Evernorth through its supplier gate, and the 19-to-3 figure follows that classification. The finding does not turn on which reading you take.

The way GPO Intel reads these boards works against this finding rather than for it. A distributor's board is filtered hard. A GPO's board is read broadly, because at a GPO most professional roles are GPO work. So we look harder at the GPO side and still find three. Nineteen against three is a floor.

Our read: each side is staffing the job it actually does. A supplier sells into portfolios it does not control, so each portfolio is a named position with a number attached. A GPO runs a portfolio, and the people who run it are category managers, which is the function it is hiring 88 of. Across the table from a corporate accounts director who does this all day sits someone for whom the same conversation is one part of a week.

What the GPOs themselves are hiring

Fifteen of the 24 employers here are GPOs or their affiliates rather than suppliers, and their boards are read broadly rather than filtered, so their 343 roles can be compared with each other.

Data and analytics288%
Advisory and consulting237%

AI and machine learning103%

A quarter of everything the GPOs in this set are hiring is category management and contracting. AI and machine learning is ten roles.

Our read: the announcements this year that drew coverage were about artificial intelligence, and the hiring is about contracting. Both can be true, and a platform is built by a smaller team than a contract portfolio is run by. What the ratio says is where the operating weight of these businesses sits, and for anyone negotiating with a GPO it says the people on the other side of the table are being hired in volume to do exactly that.

What that says about the AI announcements

Ten of the 397 roles are classed as AI and machine learning positions.

Widening from job function to the words in the posting, 50 roles name AI somewhere in the title or text. Forty-seven of those 50 are at Vizient. Premier posts one and ModMed posts two. Twenty-one of the 24 companies have none at all. Among the companies with ten or more openings, Cardinal Health, McKesson and Sourcewell post no AI role.

Vizient's release of September 23, 2026 states a "$1 billion investment over the next four years in the expertise, products, and solutions that help healthcare organizations improve performance," and says the investment was announced the previous evening at the company's Connections Summit. The release gives the object of the money as clinical, operational, supply chain and financial performance work. AI runs through it as part of what gets built rather than as the stated object of the investment.

Twenty-two of Vizient's forty-seven AI-naming roles were posted in the thirty days to October 4. The other twenty-five were posted before that window opened, which is before the announcement. Among them are `Senior Ontology and Knowledge Engineer` and `Sr Intelligent Automation Engineer`.

Our read: on the boards we can read, AI hiring in this sector is one company's staffing rather than a market's, and that company was staffing it before it said so. A press release is an announcement; a job posting is a commitment with a salary attached, and it happens earlier. What the companies we cannot read are doing is unknown.

What would change this

Seniority is not reported here. The stored seniority level is inferred from a title and reads management rather than experience, so a Principal or Lead individual contributor files at the bottom tier, and any function whose senior people are individual contributors reads as junior on it.

CCPA Purchasing Partners sits inside a hospital's applicant tenant and holds none, which is correct and also means any role of theirs not titled with their own name is invisible here.

Vizient is 229 of the 397 requisitions, so it carries most of any total. Where a figure would read as a market figure it is given per company instead.

Next month this table is recomputed and the comparison will be same-store, covering only companies present in both months, with any company added reported separately. A rise in a total that is really a rise in what we can read is the error this series has to avoid.

*Method. 397 open requisitions at 24 companies, computed October 4, 2026 from GPO Intel's jobs instrument, which states its own population and run date. One row per requisition, identified by its application URL; a unique index enforces that at the database. Health systems are excluded: a health system is a buyer, and its hiring answers a different question. A parent's jobs are not the GPO's. A role counts as naming AI when the title or posting text does, which is a keyword test and not a judgment about the work. Recency is measured on the employer's own posted date, never the date GPO Intel first read the listing; the thirty-day window is the one the instrument reports, so "before that window" is a floor rather than an exact count against September 23. Vizient's announcement date, the quoted construct and the $1 billion figure are from its own release, "Vizient Invests $1 Billion to Accelerate Healthcare Performance Improvement," Business Wire, September 23, 2026 at 9:30 AM EDT, read October 4, 2026; that release states the investment was announced the previous evening. No recruiter or hiring manager is named. Every count was computed on the run date and none is typed.*

The record supplies the paper. People supply the meaning.

Public documents show what was decided and announced. They cannot show how a category actually gets bought, why a renewal went the way it did, or what the room sounded like when the call was made. That is what GPO Intel's Expert Network exists to capture.

If you have run a category, sat on a committee, carried a bag for a manufacturer, or worked the health-system side of these relationships, we ask short questions only people like you can answer. Asynchronous, answered from memory, screened before publishing, attributed on your terms (named, title only, or anonymous), and never about your current employer.
